BRIDGEPORT
DETENTION CENTER
Alliance members
have been participating in ongoing discussions regarding the proposed 44-room Bridgeport
detention center. Yesterday, Speaker of
the House James Amann announced the facility may be scaled down and it may be
moved from the current site, which has been the subject of considerable
controversy. The Alliance
will continue to participate in this process and will be advocating for
detention capacity to be part of the joint juvenile justice planning process
between DCF and CSSD. For the latest
news on this issue, check out our CTJJA
in the News section.
JUVENILE JUSTICE PUBLIC HEARINGS
On April 4, 2005, the Judiciary Committee
heard testimony on several juvenile justice bills, including bills supported by
the Alliance - H.B. 6848: AAC The Reduction of Disproportionate Minority
Contact in the Juvenile Justice System and H.B. 6980: AAC Services Available to
a Child in a Family With Service Needs.
We will be posting video segments of the hearing to our website in the
coming week.
MEDIA COVERAGE
Yesterday, Cablevision’s Dianne
Wildman supported the concepts outlined in H.B. 6980 and
called for the state not to place status offenders in detention. You can see her editorial, which features
parent advocate Jennifer Bertrand, by visiting www.cablevisioneditorials.com.
We look forward to seeing many of
you at our forum next Tuesday.
Best,
Fernando
