CTJJA | About: History

The mission of the Connecticut Juvenile Justice Alliance is to promote a safe, effective and equitable service continuum for children and adolescents involved in, or at risk of involvement in, the juvenile justice system.

The Connecticut Juvenile Justice Alliance accomplishes its mission by serving as a catalyst for systems reform. The Alliance employs the following startegies in pursuit of its mission:

  • policy research;
  • public education;
  • strategic communications;
  • partnership development; and
  • community engagement.

The Alliance was launched in November 2001 as a collaborative of four Connecticut organizations: RYASAP, the Center for Children's Advocacy, Connecticut Voices for Children and the Tow Foundation.

The goals of the Connecticut Juvenile Justice Alliance are to:

  1. Promote a continuum of effective community-based services
  2. Eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in the Connecticut Juvenile Justice system.

To this end, in the 2005 legislative session, we will be supporting legislation to decriminalize status offenders (Family With Service Needs) and to reduce disproportionate minority representation in Connecticut's juvenile justice system.
